While saline-filled implants have been standard practice ever since the FDA moratorium on silicone gel breast implants in 1992, cohesive silicone gel implants can be given to patients as part of an adjunct study. The way these particular silicone breast implants are manufactured is a bit different than other silicone gel implants from the past. Cohesive gel implants are made with more crosslinking in order to make the gel itself a bit firmer.
Here at Boulder Plastic Surgery, we like to inform our patients as much as possible about their options and what we can provide for them specifically. The following is an overview of cohesive gel implants and their benefits.
The Benefits of Cohesive Gel Implants
- Anatomically Shaped: Instead of the typical round shape that’s common among saline implants, cohesive gel implants mimic a more natural breast shape. A breast projects more at the bottom, but without a cohesive, form stable gel, most implants are not able to maintain that shape. Cohesive gel implants can.
- Textured Surface: To reduce the risk of rotating, all cohesive gel implants and anatomic shaped implants are textured. This texturing increases friction and helps keep the implant in position.
- Less Folding: Round implants, when they have been placed properly, will allow gravity to take effect in order to obtain a natural shape. When held upright, the upper pole of the implant gradually collapses. That collapse is what gives round implants their natural look, but unfortunately it comes at a risk of folds in the implant shell. Cohesive gel implants do not run as much of a risk due to the fact that the gel is designed for shape retention.
- Less of a Chance For Leakage: Implant leakage is another one of the more common risks for this procedure, but thankfully cohesive gel implants run less of a chance to leak. This is because the implant relies less on the shell to maintain a natural breast shape and more on the filler itself, putting less pressure on the shell.
