Anesthesia Options Available to You

The type of anesthesia used will depend on the type of surgery you’re having as well as your age and health status. If you’ve had any problems with anesthesia in the past, it’s important to let your surgeon know. There are four types of anesthesia that may be administered:

General anesthesia – This is when you’re unconscious during your entire surgical procedure. Most major operations use general anesthesia, which includes an IV line hooked up to your hand or arm. Other times it’s a gas that goes through an anesthesia mask.

Regional anesthesia – Your surgeon will give you a shot of a local anesthetic to numb large areas of the body where the procedure will be performed. This can include the arm, leg, or lower half of the body.

Local anesthesia – With this type of anesthesia, your surgeon will numb a small portion of the skin where an incision is going to be made in order to eliminate any pain. It will either be administered as a shot or applied to your skin as a spray or ointment. Local anesthesia is mostly used for minor outpatient procedures.

Conscious sedation – Surgeons will use sedatives to reduce your consciousness level without having to put you completely to sleep. Conscious sedation can cause temporary forgetfulness, and many patients end up not even remembering the procedure.

Before any surgical procedures, your doctor at Boulder Plastic Surgery will discuss your anesthesia options, decide which one(s) will be used, and address any questions or concerns you have. Our team of highly trained and skilled technicians will work hard to make sure you have the best experience before, during, and after your surgical procedure.
