Beware of Stem Cell Claims

Stem cell research is promising, but it’s still in its early stages. However, according to a recent article published in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, some cosmetic practitioners are advertising false or unsubstantiated claims regarding the use of stem cells in cosmetic procedures. Although stem cell plastic surgery may have future potential, patients could be put at risk until more research can be completed.

The Danger of Stem Cell Plastic Surgery

There are a growing number of practitioners in the field of cosmetic surgery who are promoting and performing stem cell-based rejuvenation procedures that are minimally invasive, but these claims have not been properly evaluated to ensure effectiveness and patient safety. There has not been enough research done on the risks associated with stem cell and tissue processing in addition to how aging affects stem cells.

Are Stem Cells Being Used Properly?

A popular marketed procedure is the “stem cell facelift,” and many advertisers are touting this procedure as having anti-aging effects. Many times, these “stem cell facelifts” are nothing more than “lipolifting,” a fat-injecting technique that does not offer anti-aging benefits. Very little information regarding the quality of stem cells used in stem cell plastic surgery accompanies the various claims. This raises a concern about practitioners providing stem cell treatments without advanced cell-sorting, which means that a “stem cell facelift” could contain other types of cells besides stem cells.

The Cautious Approach to Cosmetic Stem Cell Therapy

Currently, stem cell research in the field of cosmetic surgery is slow moving. As of right now, there has been only one cosmetic stem cell treatment to receive approval by the FDA. However, even though there is an FDA-approved stem cell treatment for fine facial wrinkles, they are still conducting post-approval surveillance. There are over 100 different clinical trials taking a look at fat-derived stem cells at the moment, but very few have a focus on cosmetic treatments. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has put together task forces to best educate consumers about the most up-to-date information regarding the use of fat-derived stem cells for cosmetic purposes.
