Corrective Surgery for a Deviated Septum at Boulder Plastic Surgery

Rhinoplasty-Septoplasty

The nasal septum is a wall located in between the nostrils that divides the two nasal passages. It is a thin bone in front and behind the cartilage. A deviated septum is when the septum is crooked, which in addition to cosmetic issues may also cause breathing difficulties. This problem can lead to snoring and a more advanced issue called sleep apnea, which may require medical attention. The septum can be deviated due to injury or one can be born with it. It is not painful, but can become a serious health concern if left untreated.

A Deviated Septum Can Cause Breathing Problems if Not Corrected

The surgery performed to straighten the septum is called septoplasty. At Boulder Plastic Surgery our professional and experienced surgeons use a thin instrument called an endoscope to see inside the nasal passages and the condition of your septum. The surgery may be done to correct a variety of ailments such as nasal polyps, sinusitis, bleeding, and sleep apnea. When breathing problems or snoring do not subside, surgery may be performed. The surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis and may take up to two hours to complete. Local or general anesthesia will be given per the surgeon’s preference.

During the procedure, the surgeon enters through the nostrils to make an incision that separates the cartilage and bone from the mucosa. The surgeon will trim or straighten the bent septum, then the mucosa is replaced back over the cartilage and bone. A nasal pack and/or splint will be placed in the nostrils to prevent any bleeding and align the septum as it heals. Any pressure changes to your nasal area should be avoided. You should not blow your nose following surgery. Pain should be minimal and many patients return back to work within one week. There may be some swelling depending on the extent of surgery needed. Breathing will gradually become easier as the swelling goes down and the sinus passages are opened.
