Everything You Want to Know About Facial Fillers

Facial FillersIf you want to restore a soft, youthful look to your face without invasive procedures such as face or brow lifts, many Denver residents choose facial injections. The physicians at Boulder Plastic Surgery use injectable facial fillers such as Juvedern or Radiesse to plump up the skin to minimize the look of facial creases and wrinkles, smooth and round out the contours of the face, as well as give an attractive plumpness to the lips. The procedure itself only takes about 30 minutes with minimal downtime, and almost instantaneous results without cutting or anesthesia.

What Exactly is in the Facial Fillers?

We use two different kinds of facial fillers at Boulder Plastic Surgery. The first is a hyaluronic acid filler which is naturally found in the skin that begins to deteriorate as we age. Juvederm, Elevess, and Prevelle Silk are injectable hyaluronic acid gel fillers that help smooth wrinkles and folds in the skin restoring your skin’s own natural, youthful appearance. These are best for smoothing lines around the mouth and filling out the lips.

Radiesse is a hydroxyappetite injectable filler used to treat deeper wrinkles and creases in the skin such as smile lines, folds by the nose, and to contour the planes of the cheeks. It is a stronger type of injectable filler, holds its shape better, and can often last longer, which is why it is used in more aggressive reconstruction or deeper wrinkles.

How Does the Procedure Work?

After discussing your treatment plan and desired results, your physician will inject the facial filler into the specifically targeted sites on the face with a very small needle. The only anesthesia used would be a topical numbing cream on the skin.

What Are the Side Effects?

It is possible to have some mild swelling, itching, bruising, or redness at the injection sites. Typically, it is recommended to use cold packs on the injection sites for a few hours after injection. While you should not do anything strenuous for about 24 hours after the procedure, any side effects shouldn’t last any more than a week or two.

How Long do Facial Injections Last?

While the results appear quickly, they are not permanent. Treatment results vary among patients and can last anywhere from six to 18 months. Fillers will have to be repeated to maintain the optimal look you desire.

Are Injectable Facial Fillers as Effective as a Facelift?

Injectable fillers are most effective at adding more volume to the skin and adding a youthful plumpness; however, they are not effective for getting rid of excess sagging skin, which would require a face lift. Your plastic surgeon can discuss the realistic results you can expect with facial injections.

How Much do Facial Injections Cost?

Facial injections are very affordable: anywhere from $300 to $600 per treatment depending on the kind of injections you choose and how much you need. Where you could spend upwards of $10,000 on a facelift with a long recovery, facial injections are a comfortable and affordable route for those that don’t need a facelift yet.
