Eyelid Surgery – Reducing the Signs of Aging Around the Eyes

As we age, changes in the texture and consistency of the skin around the eyes can have a dramatic effect on our appearance, even affecting peripheral vision in extreme cases. However, eyelid surgery can restore a more youthful look.

By our late 30s or early 40s, skin can begin to lose some of the elasticity it once had. This enables sagging around the outer edge of the eyelid, which can cause you to look tired or sad all of the time and detract from your overall general appearance.

With time, the muscles in the lower lid area also become weaker, allowing fat and fluid to protrude. This encourages bags and puffiness in the lower lid area and adds to the appearance of fatigue and premature aging. These issues can have a negative psychological effect upon the patient, who may no longer feel that they see themselves when they look into the mirror.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty – cosmetic surgery of the upper and lower eyelid – can reduce or eliminate these issues, as well as the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. A minimally invasive facial rejuvenation procedure, blepharoplasty can be performed in the office, often as an outpatient procedure, with a local anesthetic. The procedure takes between 1-2 hours, depending upon a variety of factors, allowing the patient to return to normal activities within a few short days with few, if any, long-term side effects. Blepharoplasty involves removing excess skin, fat, and muscle to minimize the look of puffy bags below the eyes or drooping upper eyelids.

The ideal candidate for blepharoplasty would be an adult (male or female) with healthy facial tissue and muscles, is a non-smoker, and does not suffer from any life-threatening ailments that could affect healing or make the patient more prone to infection.

A physical examination of the candidate will be performed prior to the procedure to determine if there is any cause for concern and to discuss treatment and recovery options.
