Facial Implants / Cheek & Chin Augmentation
Procedure:
Change the basic shape & balance of the face using carefully styled implants to build up a receding chin, add prominence to cheekbones, or reshape the jaw line. Implants may be made of natural or artificial material. Fat grafting may be used as a natural tissue alternative to facial augmentation in certain individuals.
Length:
30 minutes to 2 hours.
Anesthesia:
Local with sedation, or general usually outpatient.
Side Effects:
Temporary discomfort, swelling, bruising, numbness and/or stiffness. In jaw surgery, inability to open mouth fully for several weeks.
Risk:
Shifting or imprecise positioning of implant, or infection around it, requiring a second operation or removal. Excess tightening & hardening of scar tissue around an artificial implant (capsular contracture), causing unnatural shape.
Exercise:
1/3 Intensity at 3 weeks, 2/3 Intensity at 6 weeks, Full Intensity at 8 weeks.
Bruising:
2 to 4 weeks.
Swelling:
Moderate/Significant 4 weeks, Subtle (Mild) 2 to 3 months, all of which are dependent upon extent of procedure(s).
Duration of Results:
Permanent with implants. Fat grafting may require several treatment sessions.
Office Visits:
1st 3 to 5 days / 2nd Visit 10 to 14 days Anticipated office visits: 3 to 5 the first 3 months, 6 months then yearly.
Icing:
4 to 5 days.
Soft Food:
Eat soft foods for or 7 days.
Pain Meds:
Ibuprofen or Narcotics.
Post-Operative Care
Back to work 7 – 10 days.
