What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are actually malfunctioning or abnormal veins that no longer properly support blood flow, which causes them to bulge under the surface of the skin. Varicose and spider veins are more common in women than in men due to additional body weight on the legs, as well as increased blood supply and hormonal changes during pregnancy. In addition to their undesirable appearance, varicose veins can also become painful and sometimes even dangerous if left untreated.
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
Sclerotherapy involves injecting varicose veins with a chemical (called a sclerosant) that causes them to safely collapse and become scar tissue. Blood is then rerouted to healthy veins. This results in reduced inflammation and the disappearance of bulging, discolored sections of blood vessels in the treated area. Here at Boulder Plastic Surgery, we can even use ultrasound technology to locate and inject varicose veins that are not accessible at the skin’s surface.
How Long Do Sclerotherapy Treatments Take?
Some veins may need to be injected several times over the course of 4 to 6 weeks to achieve optimum results. The procedure is performed right here in our office and takes about 30 minutes. Patients may experience some short-term redness or swelling immediately after treatment, and a compression garment can be worn to alleviate side effects. For the most part, patients can resume their regular activities as soon as they leave the office.
