A transgender person is someone who is born into a body that does not match their gender identity. Transgender people can feel very isolated due to this, and they may also experience body dysphoria. There are many ways to alleviate their feeling of being out of place. While some transgender people are perfectly happy expressing their gender identity through their choice of clothing, others still feel trapped so long as their physical bodies are at odds with the gender that they are in their heart. The best way to alleviate such a persistent feeling is through transgender surgery.
Transgender surgery, also known as “gender confirmation surgery,” is a form of plastic surgery that changes the physical appearance of the patient to match their gender identity. There are many options when it comes to receiving gender confirmation surgery. “Male to Female” surgery, or “MtF,” occurs when a patient who was born with male sexual organs undergoes procedures to create gender-confirming breast tissue and/or gender-confirming sexual organs. Patients will prepare for the surgery by taking hormones for some time before the procedure. Typically, a patient wishing to undergo female-confirming surgery will get “top surgery,” or placement of breast tissue, several months to a year before going through further surgery to alter their sexual organs. However, a transgender female is under no obligation to undergo both of these procedures – it’s up to the individual what will make them feel more at home in their bodies, and what is unnecessary for them.
Individuals who are either “female to male” (FtM) transgender or “male to female” (MtF) transgender have the option to undergo top surgery. The goal of this surgery is to help the person feel more comfortable in their own skin. If the individual is FtM they may elect to undergo transmasculine top surgery, which means our team of professionals will remove the breast tissue and fat and resize the nipple areolar complex in order to create a more masculine appearance to the chest. Optimally the patient will appear as if they never had breasts other than some small scars underneath the pecks.
Individuals who are MtF may choose to undergo transfeminine top surgery, which means our team will enhance the appearance of the breasts to be more feminine, usually through breast implants. A fat transfer can also be utilized in this instance, depending on the build of the patient. Both of these surgeries are done in order for the patient to be comfortable in their own body, and for the outcome to be as seamless and natural as possible. Downtime, scarring, and whether or not the patient may need more than one procedure will be discussed at your consultation.
Whether the patient elects to go through top surgery, studies have shown that transgender people who experience dysphoria are often more comfortable and at ease with themselves after their bodies have been surgically altered.
