Breast surgery doesn’t only concern itself with size and cosmetic manipulation, but is an important component of recovery after breast cancer treatments for Denver patients. After undergoing a mastectomy, most cancer patients opt for implants to reconstruct their breast(s), and can also opt for nipple and areola reconstruction to give the new breast a natural look. Both Dr. Kuisle and Dr. Hartley of Boulder Plastic Surgery specialize in reconstructive breast surgery for patients that have undergone cancer treatments, and are committed to working with you to help you achieve your desired results so you can regain your confidence and celebrate your renewed health.
What is nipple and areola reconstruction?
When cancer patients undergo a complete mastectomy, the entire breast and all associated parts are removed. A plastic surgeon can reconstruct the look of your natural nipple and areola using skin and muscle tissue from different areas of your body. The new nipple and areola area can be darkened using tattooing to create a natural look.
Can’t my natural nipple be reattached to my newly reconstructed breast?
While there are some instances where the physician can save the nipple if the cancer has not affected the nearby cells, it is not usually the best course of action due to risk of cancer recurrence and difficulty in reattaching the tissue properly. In fact, many times it looks more unnatural to try to reattach the natural nipple than when reconstructed.
When can I get nipple and areola reconstruction?
Nipple and areola reconstruction is an optional portion of the breast reconstruction process for patients who want them to look as real as possible. Nipple and areola reconstruction usually takes place about 3-4 months after the initial implant surgery so the breasts have had a chance to heal.
