What Does Rhinoplasty Involve?
Rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure that lasts between one to two hours. Local or general anesthesia with sedation is typically used during the surgery. Depending on what the patient wants to correct, incisions can be made across the columella, which is the tissue separating the nostrils, or inside of the nose.
Why Should I Choose Rhinoplasty?
Many patients are self-conscious about certain characteristics of their nose, which can lead to a decreased quality of life. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty can correct many different exterior nasal concerns including, but not limited to:
- The size of the nose in proportion to the rest of the facial features
- Nostrils that are upturned or too large
- The overall profile of the nose including depressions or bumps in the bridge
- How wide the nose is at the bridge
What Can I Expect After the Procedure?
Within five to seven days, patients should be able to return to work but must wear a splint or tape for a week. Following surgery, exercise or strenuous activities should be kept to a minimum for at least three weeks.
Potential risks to be aware of range from septum perforation due to incomplete healing, infection, and additional surgeries.
The side effects for rhinoplasty tend to be quite mild, such as:
- Nasal drainage
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Temporary decreased feeling in the nose
- Bruising
