In the last year, patients who have received plastic or cosmetic procedures at discounted rates from surgeons have been estimated anywhere between 200,000 and over a million. Unfortunately, many of these men and women have ultimately paid a higher price, as a large percentage of these procedures were not done correctly.
Instead of opting to save up and wait to have a procedure done by a board-certified doctor, folks are having work done by surgeons in other countries for less. However, these patients end up paying extra to have these procedures corrected or reversed altogether. How can these botched procedures be avoided? Read on for more information.
What to Consider Before Undergoing a Procedure
- Board Certification: Every plastic surgeon in the United States must receive board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery. To check a doctor’s specialty and certification status, the American Board of Medical Specialties offers a search engine that will let you enter a doctor’s name and location.
- Accredited Facilities: Research the hospital or clinic you’ll be attending for your procedure. Make sure that the facility has received accreditation from a valid institution and that the facility’s location matches the address you were given. For example, if you schedule a consultation at a hospital pictured on a website, but drive to the address to see that it’s a small clinic located in a strip mall, it would be wise to turn back and ask some questions.
- Look Into Disciplinary Actions: It would be in your best interest to check your state’s medical board to see if your doctor has any disciplinary actions leveled against them.
- Ask Questions: During any consultation, it is very important to have a list of questions regarding your procedure, your doctor, and your facility. A proper surgeon will answer all of your questions honestly.
