The ASPS survey is sent out to physicians who are all board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties. In the United States, the ASPS’ survey provides the most reliable statistics that measure cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures.
The Results: Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in 2013
The ASPS received a total of 801 completed questionnaires from active physicians, and among these participants there were 479 plastic surgeons, 221 dermatologists, and 101 Otolaryngologists. For 2013, the overall results are as follows:
- 15.1 million cosmetic procedures
- 13.4 million minimally invasive cosmetic procedures

The statistics for cosmetic procedures:
- Breast augmentation – 290,000 procedures
- Nose reshaping – 221,000 procedures
- Eyelid surgery – 216,000 procedures
- Liposuction – 200,000 procedures
- Facelift – 133,000 procedures
Breast augmentation has been the top cosmetic surgical procedure since 2006, and it has risen one percent since 2012.
Why Is Breast Augmentation the Top Choice?
Breast augmentation may be so popular because the procedure offers women with a variety of choices when it comes to adding volume and shape to the breasts. The most common forms of breast augmentation include silicone breast implants, saline breast implants, fat transfer breast augmentation, and form stable silicone breast implants. In 2013, about 72 percent of breast augmentations used silicone implants, and about 28 percent of the procedures used saline implants.
The breast implant procedure has changed over the years. Boulder Plastic Surgery is now able to customize a patient’s breast augmentation procedure, as the size, shape, and texture are all dependent on the patient’s specific surgical needs. With customized care due to technological advances, breast augmentation is helping patients feel more confident before and after the procedure.
