In 2013, ear surgery (otoplasty) was ranked the 11th most popular operation of the year, according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Otoplasty is a reconstructive surgery to reshape, reposition, or improve the proportion of the ear as it relates to the overall facial structure. Thus, otoplasties are geared toward fixing large and protruding ears. Boulder Plastic Surgery handles otoplasty procedures among other facial rejuvenation options (eye brow lift, eye lid surgery, rhinoplasty, etc.)
Otoplasty Candidates
Men, women, and children turn to otoplasty to help improve their self-confidence. In fact, men accounted for more than 38 percent of otoplasties in 2013. You may be a good candidate for otoplasty if:
- The ears have reached their full size (this typically happens at about the age of six).
- The ears stick out too much
- Are in good general health
Boulder Plastic Surgery encourages patients to communicate their concerns regarding otoplasty at the initial consultaion. An otoplasty is an individualized procedure, and it should be something you want. A consultation helps your surgeon understand what you are looking to improve.
About the Procedure
The term otoplasty covers a variety of enhancements made to the ears. For patients that feel as though their ears stick out too much, ear pinning can be used to correct the issue. During this procedure, the ears are flattened so that they are more level with the head. Repositioning occurs when the surgeon makes the ears more flush. To diminish the appearance of oversized ears, patients can opt for reshaping.
Otoplasty Risks and Recovery
Otoplasty reveals nearly immediate results, especially for patients who have protruding ears. Like all types of cosmetic surgery, otoplasty does come with some risks including:
- Bleeding
- Swelling
- Possible scarring
- Change in skin sensation
- Infection
Following otoplasty, patients should be able to return to work within 5 to 7 days. It is also recommended that contact sports be avoided for at least 2 months.
