Simultaneous breast reconstruction is a good option for women who do not require subsequent radiation treatments. However, staged breast reconstruction is a better option for many women who do require radiation, as radiation can alter the appearance of a newly reconstructed breast. In this case, a tissue expander will be inserted after the mastectomy in order to keep the breast skin that was saved during the procedure stretched and supple. This prepares the skin for the final procedures after radiation is completed. Women may also opt for delayed breast reconstruction if their mastectomy is performed without a plastic surgeon.
After a patient has decided when to have her surgery, she must then decide which type of breast reconstruction is right for her. There are two options, implants and flaps.
