Recovering From a Septoplasty

Learn more about our Septoplasty procedure at Boulder Plastic Surgery.

A septoplasty is a very common nasal procedure and is usually performed to correct a deviated septum, which can impede airflow. Most surgeries can be completed in less than an hour and don’t require any external incisions or cutting. In order to ensure the best and fastest recovery, it is beneficial to be aware of the post-procedure recovery process.

Post-Procedure Expectations

Luckily, modern technology and skilled physicians provide very efficient and simple procedures that shorten recovery time. After a septoplasty procedure most patients can expect very little swelling or discoloration to the external part of the nose. It is common, however, to experience some blood and fluid drainage from the nose. Do not be alarmed, this is normal and may continue throughout the week. Placing an ice pack on your nose can help minimize bleeding. It may also be beneficial to keep gauze pads handy in the event of an unexpected drip. If bleeding ever seems excessive you should consult your physician.

It is common to have a stuffy feeling in your head for about a week after surgery. This occurs because of membrane swelling in the nose. Swelling will gradually decrease over the next few weeks.

During your surgery your doctor will use nasal packing which is used to keep your septum straight. It may be removed immediately after the procedure ends or sometime within the 1-4 days following.

Some pain and discomfort may occur after your surgery. If you are provided with a pain medication, take it as directed. If you are not prescribed a pain medication you may take acetaminophen (commonly Tylenol) to treat pain. Do NOT take medications like Aspirin, which could cause additional bleeding. If pain persists you should use an ice mask or cool washcloth to ease face discomfort.

You will likely be asked to schedule post-operative visits after your procedure is conducted. These visits are important; your physician will clean and examine your nose which will ensure recovery safety and improve nasal breathing. Usually the first visit will occur 5-7 days after surgery and the second visit will occur 10-14 days after.

It is important to remember that the recovery process is inevitable but temporary. Being patient and keeping a positive attitude will put you on a fast path to easy breathing. Remember if you have any questions to contact your physician at Boulder Plastic Surgery.
