Reduce Neck and Back Pain with Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure done to remove excess fat, tissue, and/or skin from the patient’s breasts. While many women either want larger breasts or are content with their size, other women find they have too much of a good thing. Disproportionately large breasts can cause the following problems:

What Does Breast Reduction Involve?

Our surgeon will remove any excess fat or tissue. Beforehand we will discuss with you what size you would like your breasts to be after surgery, so you will have a good idea of what to expect. After the excess tissue is removed the breasts and nipples may need to be repositioned so they are aesthetically pleasing. Drooping nipples can be lifted at this time.

What Is the Recovery Like?

Our surgeon will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor the patient’s recovery. At some point, they will also replace the patient’s bandages with a surgical bra. The patient will have to wear the surgical bra all the time except when taking a bath or shower.

The patient should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting after the surgery, and they should avoid wearing underwire bras for several months.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The ideal candidate for breast reduction will be a patient in overall good health with realistic expectations. The patient should be at a stable weight, for weight fluctuations can affect the results of the surgery. Similarly, the patient should not be planning on having more children, for many of the breast reduction techniques can impair the patient’s ability to breastfeed.

How to Prepare for Breast Reduction Surgery

Our surgeon may want the patient to undergo a mammogram and several lab tests. They will advise the patient to stop smoking and to not take herbal supplements, aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs for a given time before the surgery to reduce bleeding.
