The Benefits of Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid can be a beneficial treatment for acne and psoriasis, because of its ability to remove dead skin cells and lessen the appearance of minor scars by removing excess, undesirable tissue.
Prescription strength salicylic acid lotion works by causing the uppermost skin in the application area to swell, soften, and shed — leaving new, fresher skin beneath.
This shedding is especially helpful where there is a buildup of scaly tissue, such as in the case of psoriasis, where the overproduction of skin cells can leave a thick layer of scaly skin behind.
Salicylic Acid Chemical Peels
Salicylic acid can come in many skin treatment products, but some patients see the most significant results when it’s used in a chemical peel. A salicylic acid chemical peel is safe for patients of all skin types, and is performed in office by IV Seasons dermatologists.
Our dermatologists will start by thoroughly cleaning your face, and using alcohol to strip oils off the skin — this allows the chemical peel to treat deeper levels of the epidermis. Once the peel is applied, a white frost will appear on the skin, and a mild tingling will be felt, which will pass quickly.
The chemicals are then cleaned off the skin, sunscreen is applied (regardless of the season), and patients are able to go about their day without any recovery time. About three days later the skin will begin to peel for a few days, revealing the rejuvenated skin by one week after the treatment.
How to Use Salicylic Acid Lotion
One of the greatest benefits of salicylic acid lotion is the variety of products available and the simplicity of their use. Instead of a salicylic chemic peel, some patients may be prescribed a simple skin care routine for their condition.
For Acne Treatment:
- Prepare the treatment area by carefully and thoroughly cleansing the skin prior to bed.
- Apply a thin layer of salicylic acid lotion to the desired location.
- In the morning, clean the salicylic acid lotion from the skin, and complete the normal skin care routine.
In some patients the use of salicylic acid lotion can cause the skin to dry and become itchy. Applying an oil-free moisturizer to the affected area should resolve that issue.
To Remove Calluses or Warts:
- Soak the callused area in warm water for five minutes to soften the skin.
- Apply salicylic acid lotion generously to the callus, avoiding the unaffected area.
- Complete one to two times per day until the callus or wart disappears. (This can take up to 2 weeks for calluses, or 12 weeks for warts)
Very few patients report mild allergic reactions to the salicylic acid lotion, but its use should be discontinued if this occurs.
