Get Rid of Spider Veins with Sclerotherapy Treatment

Sclerotherapy at Boulder Plastic Surgery is a Great Solution to Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy Treatment

Sclerotherapy has been widely used since the 1930s to treat varicose and spider veins. The procedure is noninvasive, quick to perform, and produces great results. During the procedure, the targeted vein is injected with a solution that causes it to swell and stick together. Over time the vein collapse, turns to scar tissue, and fades. From start to finish a sclerotherapy treatment at Boulder Plastic Surgery takes less than forty-five minutes, and you can get back to your regular routine immediately afterwards! Contact us today to determine if you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy and whether the procedure is right for you.

What to Expect From a Sclerotherapy Treatment

Leg vein injections are minimally invasive and work well for most patients; however, not everyone is a good candidate, and not every vein can be treated. Women are not eligible while pregnant and must wait at least three months after delivery before being considered for the procedure. If you have experienced a blot clot at any point, your eligibility will be determined by a vascular specialist. Depending on the extremity and cause of the clot, you may or may not be eligible. It is also important to note that not every vein can be treated. Veins that can potentially be used for future surgical bypass procedures will not be considered.

If it is determined that you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy and you choose to proceed with the treatment, you’ll want to know exactly what to expect. The procedure itself will take thirty to forty-five minutes to complete, depending on the area treated and the number of veins. The area to be treated will be cleaned, and then a solution will be injected directly into the blood vessel using a very fine needle. The majority of spider veins respond to the treatment in three to six weeks, with larger veins sometimes taking three to four months to fully respond (rarely does a vein not respond). After the procedure, you will be able to return to your normal activities and are encouraged to walk and move around regularly. The results are usually permanent, but new veins may emerge in time and require additional treatment.
