Silicone vs. Saline Implants

Women in the Denver and Boulder, CO area have many factors to consider when deciding on breast augmentation surgery. One of the most important decisions to make is whether to opt for silicone or saline implants. Each alternative offers a variety of advantages and disadvantages. Before your procedure, it is important to speak with an experienced plastic surgeon about which option is right for you.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants offer a more natural feel similar to that of breast tissue. These implants are pre-filled with silicone gel, which requires a larger incision. Silicone implants are approved for breast augmentation in women ages 22 and over and for women of all ages for breast reconstruction.

Silicone implants collapse less when held upright compared to a traditional saline implant. They also show fewer wrinkles. If a silicone implant happens to rupture, it is more difficult to detect and can require a costly MRI scan. Ruptured silicone implants are not thought to cause health issues such as breast cancer or reproductive problems, but they can cause breast pain or changes in shape or contour of the breast.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are inserted while still empty, and are then filled with sterile salt water. They are approved for women ages 18 and over for breast augmentation and for women of any age that are in need of breast reconstruction. Since they are placed under the chest walls empty, a smaller incision is needed. Saline implants do not provide the same tissue-like feel of silicone gel implants, and the upper portion will collapse if the implant is held upright.

If a saline implant ruptures, the implant will deflate. The body can absorb the saline over the span of a few days, and will not suffer any health risks. Removing the silicone shell will likely require surgery, but a new implant can be replaced at the same time if the patient wishes.
