Study Shows Link Between Breast Asymmetry and Emotional Health

A recent study conducted by researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital, which involved adolescent girls and young women ranging in ages from 12-21 years, showed significant differences in the psychosocial ability of subjects suffering from breast asymmetry.

More than a Cosmetic Issue

For the purposes of the study, researchers studied 59 subjects and evaluated their psychosocial functioning and health-related quality of life. For each patient, it was noted that the degree of asymmetry between breasts was at least one bra cup size. Similar evaluations were also conducted for girls with “normal” breast growth, as well as those with macromastia (overlarge breasts).

During the study, several aspects of mental health, such as self-esteem, and emotional well-being were considered. It was found that girls with breast asymmetry scored significantly lower in those areas, and also exhibited “borderline” issues in social function, eating behaviors, and attitudes.

While some breast asymmetry is normal in the developing adolescent and typically evens out over time, it is clear that, in persistent cases, failure to intervene can have significant impact to the developing sense of self.

Breast Augmentation

Through surgical breast augmentation, patients can gain relief from the emotional insecurity that can accompany an asymmetrical appearance. With the use of either silicone gel or saline implants, a skilled surgeon can create a fuller, more balanced appearance with minimum of trauma to the surrounding tissue.

Depending upon the desired outcome and the patient’s relative body size, one of three approaches is typically chosen:

These procedures can typically be accomplished in two hours or less under general anesthesia, allowing the patient to see the full benefit of the surgery immediately.

Minor side effects, such as soreness and mild swelling, may be evident after the procedure. It will dissipate over time, usually lasting no more than 2 to 3 months.
