After I met with you on Monday, I was with my support group and learned from one of the members that your father had passed away. I remember you speaking of him a while back, I think at the time of his birthday, that he was facing a lot of the challenges of aging.

It is truly hard to know what to say that will express my appreciation for your compassion and support over the past year. No one can deny that BC is a mean and ugly disease and there were days/months that were very hard but you were always my best advocate and Sandy my best friend that I could possible have through it all. You have always treated me with the upmost respect and genuine regard to do the very best you could possibly do as my doctor, and all the while with a certain “twinkle” in your eye that also made me rest assured.
Under your care, I have felt “held” as a person — this is hard to put into words — but it is a feeling that “I matter to you.” It is kind of a sense that while I am currently your patient, you carry a thought of me around with you — about my well-being, my welfare, and I somehow think that helps me heal. Dr. Berg told me you called the day of my hernia #2 surgery to see how it went and to remind me to follow up with you in 6 months (I did make that appt. with Holly for late April). I thought that was just so sweet. I said that to Dr. Berg and he looked at me like I was kind of crazy (“Well, Mary, that’s what doctors do”), but not really. Caring doctors do that, Dr. Kuisle.”
