The Difference Between Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty

Not only is the nose one of the most noticeable of the facial features, it also performs the essential task of controlling airflow while breathing. Many times, visible nasal deformities are tied to internal issues as well. There are two major categories of nasal surgical procedures: rhinoplasty and septoplasty. Rhinoplasty is focused on the outward appearance of the nose, while septoplasty addresses internal abnormalities.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is performed mostly for cosmetic reasons. Since the nose is such a complex facial feature and because it is unique to each individual person, rhinoplasty depends on both your nasal structure and its relationship to each of your other facial features. It is not possible to picture the perfect nose without considering these factors. With rhinoplasty more than most other plastic surgery procedures, conservatism is very important to preserve a natural look.

If you are self-conscious about your nose, rhinoplasty can help to improve your quality of life by boosting your confidence. It is important to communicate with your doctors before your surgery about your expectations and what you are looking to correct.

Septoplasty

The wall that separates each nasal passage between the nostrils is called the septum. In addition to supporting the nose, the septum also directs airflow. It is made up of cartilage and thin bone, and when the cartilage or bone is not straight, a deviated septum occurs. A deviated septum can cause difficulty breathing, sleep apnea, and snoring.

To straighten the septum and improve breathing, many patients undergo septoplasty. Nasal mucosa is the layer of soft tissue that lines the septum and nasal passages, and during septoplasty a surgeon makes an incision that divides the nasal mucosa from the bone and cartilage. The surgeon can then straighten or eliminate some of the bent cartilage before returning the mucosa back over the bone and cartilage.
