What is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon?
To be considered a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a doctor must complete a minimum of five years of surgical training with two years specifically concentrated on plastic surgery. Doctors must also be experienced in all plastic surgery procedures and perform those procedures only in medical facilities that have been accredited. In addition to following a strict code of ethics, a doctor will also have to continue their medical education in areas like standards and patient safety. An ASPS Member Surgeon is also board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Questions to Consider
To ensure the best possible results, there are several important questions to ask your doctor before heading in for surgery. Having open communication between you and your surgeon is critical in determining whether you are an ideal candidate for plastic surgery. Here are a few important questions that should be addressed during your consultation:
- Is your doctor certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons?
- Is your doctor a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons?
- Has your doctor received specialized training in plastic surgery? How many years of training have they had?
- Have they performed the type of procedure you are considering before? If so, how often?
