What Can I Expect to Happen?

As you prepare for surgery, you’re sure to have questions about what to expect.  Here is a breakdown of what you can prepare for before, during, and after having liposuction:

Before: Your doctor will first determine whether you are a candidate for the operation.  If he or she determines you are fit for the procedure, you will discuss your health and any medications you may be taking.  It’s important that you are in good health in order for the surgery to be completed without any complications, as well as allowing you to have a comfortable recovery.  Once you’ve had the entire procedure explained to you and you want to go through with it, we’ll give you further directions to follow in the weeks leading up to your appointment.

During: Before beginning the liposuction surgery, the doctor will mark your body so he or she knows where the fat is going to be removed from.  You will then be given an anesthetic.  Once the anesthesia has been administered and is working, small incisions will be made in the areas that had previously been marked.  A small hollow tube is then inserted and used to suction out the fat.  The entire procedure can take anywhere from an hour and a half to four hours, depending on how much fat is being removed.

After:  Once the surgery is completed, you’ll be moved to a recovery room.  Usually after a few hours, you’ll be able to leave the office.  You will have to wear special clothing in order to keep the skin compressed.  You may have some pain once the anesthesia wears off and you will have some swelling that could last for weeks or months.  There will be scars where the incisions were made.  We will give you post-operative directions as well as pain medication and antibiotics.
