Two Types of Tummy Tuck Procedures Are Available at Boulder Plastic Surgery
An abdominoplasty is appropriate for men and women who are in good health, and is often combined with liposuction. A tummy tuck can also help people who were previously obese and now have excess abdominal skin. Women who have stretched abdominal muscles and skin caused by pregnancy often have an abdominoplasty performed to correct this as well.
Two Main Types of Abdominoplasty
The two options for a tummy tuck include a complete abdominoplasty and a partial (or mini) abdominoplasty. We will discuss your options and your desired results during your consultation, but below is a brief overview of each procedure:
- A complete abdominoplasty is the option for patients who need the most rectification in the abdominal area. The abdomen is cut from one hipbone to the other with a low incision. The skin, tissue, and muscle of the abdomen is then manipulated, cut, and contoured. The belly button is relocated on the abdomen after the navel is detached from connective tissues.
- A partial or mini-abdominoplasty is usually performed on patients who have fat deposits below the navel. Good candidates for a mini-tummy tuck include patients who do not have enough extra fat or loose skin for a full tummy tuck procedure, yet have too much fat and skin for liposuction alone to remove. The mini-abdominoplasty requires shorter, smaller incisions, and the belly button is not usually moved. This type of surgery is less invasive and can sometimes be done with an endoscope. Typically, this type of tummy tuck takes two hours or less to perform.
Depending on the extent of correction needed and your desired results, a tummy tuck can take anywhere from one to six hours. Individual factors for each person’s case also determine if an overnight hospital stay is required. A tummy tuck procedure requires general anesthesia.
When you come in for your consultation, your doctor will discuss several topics with you regarding your desired results. Your answers to these questions — and the condition of your abdomen and the abdominal skin and fat tissues — will determine whether you need a complete or partial abdominoplasty.
