What Are Gummy Bear Implants?

Office Team
Breast augmentation remains one of the most widely performed cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States. Until recently, women only had the option of silicone or saline implants. Now, women considering breast augmentation surgery can also opt for form stable implants. Form stable implants, commonly referred to as “gummy bear implants”, offer many benefits, including a more natural feel and shape.

Advantages of Gummy Bear Breast Implants

As of right now, the FDA has approved gummy bear implants by three different manufacturers, including Mentor and Allergan. MemoryShape implants by Mentor and the Allergan Natrelle Style 410 breast implant offer patients a variety of different shapes and volumes to choose from.

Gummy bear implants are designed with a tear drop shape, which is thicker at the bottom and tapered at the top. To be able to keep this type of shape, the silicone gel used must be firmer than that found in traditional round silicone implants.

When a gummy bear implant is cut in half, it still keeps its natural-looking shape because of the thicker gel that is used. Other benefits of this type of breast implant include:

Important Information

As with all cosmetic surgical procedures, there are disadvantages and risks involved with gummy bear breast implants. If a gummy bear implant rotates, it can cause distortion in the shape of the breast. Although the thicker gel used offers a variety of benefits, it also often requires a slightly longer incision to insert the implant. Other risks associated with gummy bear implants, or any breast implants in general, include bleeding, rare cases of infection, and implant rupture. These risks are significantly reduced if you choose to have the procedure performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon.
