What Can a Rhinoplasty Do For You?
A rhinoplasty procedure can change a variety of exterior nasal characteristics, including:
- The size of the nose in relation to other facial features
- The width of the nose at the bridge
- The nose profile, including any humps or depressions in the nose bridge
- The tip of the nose
- Asymmetrical nostrils that might be considered large or upturned
- Overall nasal deviation
When there is an imbalance with any one, or a combination of these particular characteristics in relation to facial symmetry or proportion, it can cause self-consciousness and issues with self esteem. A rhinoplasty can permanently correct these imbalances.
The Procedure
Rhinoplasty is often a 1-2 hour outpatient procedure that requires general anesthesia. Depending on the nature of the procedure, incisions are either made inside the nose or outside across the columella (the tissue that separates the nostrils). Soft tissues that cover the nose are raised to allow access to the structure of the nose. Using cartilage grafted from other parts of the body, most commonly the septum or a piece from the ear, nasal structures can be augmented accordingly. Once the underlying structure is sculpted to the shape desired, nasal skin and tissue is redraped and the incisions are closed.
Post-Procedure Recovery and Side Effects
Like all plastic surgery procedures, there are a few side effects and risks to be aware of before undergoing a rhinoplasty. Potential risks include insufficient improvement, infection, septum perforation due to incomplete healing, and the need for more operative procedures. Rhinoplasty side effects are fairly mild:
- Temporary decreased sensation in the nose
- Tenderness
- Bruising
- Nasal drainage
- Significant, but temporary swelling
Patients who have undergone a rhinoplasty will, on average, be back to work in about 5 to 7 days with a splint or tape that must be worn for a week’s time. Any sort of strenuous activity or exercise should be done at a minimum for at least two weeks after a rhinoplasty procedure.
