What is Septoplasty?

Patients suffering from septal abnormalities can undergo septoplasty at Boulder Plastic Surgery. This procedure helps to correct a nasal septum that is bent, broken, or damaged to improve airway obstruction.

Septal Abnormalities

The nasal septum is the wall that divides each nasal passage between the nostrils. In addition to directing airflow, the septum also supports the nose. The front of the septum is made up of cartilage, and the back is comprised of thin bone. A deviated septum happens if either the bone or cartilage is bent. A deviated septum can occur:

When the septum is not straight, it cannot only cause difficulty breathing, but also sleep apnea or snoring.

The Procedure

Septoplasty is generally a 1-2 hour outpatient procedure requiring general anesthesia. Both the nasal passages and the septum are lined with the nasal mucosa, which is a layer of soft tissue. A plastic surgeon works through the nose and makes an incision that separates underlying cartilage and bone from the nasal lining, then either works to remove some of the cartilage or straighten it. The mucosa is returned over the bone and cartilage. Small plastic splints are left in the nose for 5 days to support the tissues as they heal.

Recovery, Risks, and Side Effects

As with all plastic surgery procedures there are a few side effects and risks associated with septoplasty. Those risks include infection, incomplete improvement, small burst blood vessels, and the need for additional surgery. Side effects are generally mild, such as:

On average, patients are ready to go back to work between 5-7 days after surgery. Those who exercise should wait a few weeks before returning to their usual regiment. After three weeks, you may work out at 1/3 of your typical intensity. You can raise this figure to 2/3 after six weeks, and at eight weeks you should be able to go back to your normal routine.
