FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Most areas require 3-5 treatments applied at 4-6 week intervals to achieve optimal benefit. Long-term results depend on multiple factors such as hair thickness, the area treated and the hair’s growth cycle.
- WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE?
Treatments are comfortable and safe. A clear gel will be applied to the skin. Then, the BBL energy is delivered with a cooled applicator so there is minimal or no discomfort. Your treatment provider may choose to glide the applicator on the skin or stamp it depending on size and location of treated area. During the treatment, some patients experience a warm or stinging sensation in the treatment area. For your safety, your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. Personal sensitivity varies from patient to patient. Discuss your sensitivity with your clinician before treatment.
- HOW LONG DOES A FOREVER BARE BBL TREATMENT TAKE?
Treatment time will vary depending upon the size of the area treated and your hair and skin type. Typically, a smaller area only takes a few minutes while a large area can take 15 minutes or longer. Forever Bare BBL is a comfortable treatment with virtually no downtime. In most cases, you can resume your normal daily activities immediately.
- WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TREATMENT?
Immediately following your treatment, you may experience some redness that should go away within a few hours. A few days to a week after treatment you may experience what seems to be regrowth of hair. Most of these hairs are actually being shed as a result of your Forever Bare BBL treatment and are not growing back. Minimal aftercare is needed. Your clinician will provide you with more information on what to expect as well as give you an aftercare plan to follow that will involve avoiding direct sun exposure and using sunscreen.

ProFractional & Profractional XC
About ProFractional™ Therapy
ProFractional Therapy is a quick and comfortable laser procedure with little downtime, used for improving the overall appearance of your skin. The procedure is performed in your physician’s office and can be custom tailored to your specific skin conditions and desired outcome.
How does ProFractional work?
ProFractional uses a tiny laser beam to treat thousands of pinpoint areas of your skin. Because only a fraction of your skin is directly treated with the laser, the surrounding untreated tissue promotes rapid healing. This skin’s wound healing response creates new collagen which add firmness and resilience to the skin.
What is ProFractional Therapy?
ProFractional Therapy is a quick and comfortable laser procedure with little downtime, used for improving the overall appearance of your skin. The procedure is performed in your physician’s office and can be custom tailored to your specific skin conditions and desired outcome. How does ProFractional work? ProFractional uses a tiny laser beam to treat thousands of pinpoint areas of your skin. Because only a fraction of your skin is directly treated with the laser, the surrounding untreated tissue promotes rapid healing. This skin’s wound healing response creates new collagen which add firmness and resilience to the skin. What is the primary application of ProFractional? Based on an assessment of your skin condition and cosmetic goals, your physician may choose to use ProFractional whenever a combination of resurfacing with minimal downtime is desired. What areas of the body can be treated? Most skin areas can be treated. Popular treatment areas are the face and neck, though many people also treat the chest and hands. You should discuss your needs with your physician. How many treatments will I need? Excellent results can be obtained in just one treatment, though the number of treatments may vary from patient to patient. Your physician can personalize a plan based on your specific needs and may choose to combine ProFractional Therapy with other aesthetic procedures to further personalize your treatment. What will happen during the procedure? Your skin will be cleaned in the treatment area and your eyes will be protected with safety shields. A laser handpiece will be positioned gently on the skin. When the laser energy is applied, you will hear a rapid succession of snapping sounds. The handpiece will be moved around to adjacent locations until the entire treatment area has been covered. The procedure normally takes 15 to 30 minutes. Will it be uncomfortable? ProFractional therapy is widely regarded as a comfortable procedure, usually tolerated with the use of a topical numbing cream or a local anesthetic, depending on the depth of treatment. What should I expect immediately after the treatment? Immediately following the procedure you may experience mild redness and a sensation resembling sunburn. Your physician will advise you on specific after-treatment care recommendations, which may include analgesics and application of an ointment to keep the skin moist. How long will it take to recover? Complete healing typically occurs within a few days and most patients usually feel comfortable enough to get back to work and apply makeup a day or two after the treatment. There will likely be some swelling that will subside within several days following the treatment. What aftercare do I need? You may be given skin care products and instructions on how to use them. Your skin will be sensitive to ultra-violet light after the procedure, so you must avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed. It is recommended that you always use some level of solar protection to avoid sun damage and premature aging of your skin. When should I expect results? As your skin heals in the days following your treatment, you may notice a general tightening effect. However, the true benefit of ProFractional is the collagen remodeling that occurs during the 4 to 6 months following your treatment.
Acne Scar Revision
Laser treatment for active acne or acne scars is an exciting new technology that reduces breakouts, redness, and leaves the skin looking smoother. Using a combination of infrared and pulsed light, this laser treatment effectively eliminates active acne in a quick, painless, non-invasive procedure. It’s safe and takes very little time to perform overall. At Boulder Plastic Surgery, we offer a laser treatment for active acne, and to better inform our patients on active acne and what to expect with this treatment, we’ve developed this helpful overview.
What is Active Acne?
For starters, let’s tackle the source of what causes active acne. Deep below the surface of the skin is a gland called the sebaceous gland. It secretes oil into skin pores, which then allows the oil to flow to the surface of the skin. Acne is an abnormal impairment of this process. Instead of exiting the pore, the oil forms a plug. More oil accumulates behind that plug, it hardens, and then becomes a cyst. Bacteria feed on this buildup, which then causes inflammation and redness, otherwise known as active acne.
How Does This Procedure Fight It?
Laser for active acne is a noninvasive treatment that utilizes pulsed infrared light energy to reduce the oil secretions that produce acne, while reducing redness and inflammation in the skin. Here’s how it works:
- By gently heating your skin’s upper layers, pulsed light energy helps eliminate the bacteria that live on the surface of your skin and causes acne redness.
- The infrared laser targets your skin from the inside out, which decreases the amount of oil secretions caused by the sebaceous gland.
- This laser treatment for active acne and acne scars also helps stimulate tissue repair to reduce acne scars caused by the acne process.
During this treatment, you will experience minimal discomfort at most. A warming sensation or a feeling of a rubber band snapping on your skin is common, but results will vary based on the level of treatment. Supplementary chemical therapies can be used in conjunction with this laser treatment. To produce the desired results, you will likely require 3 to 4 treatments over 2 to 4 week intervals. You will also need maintenance treatments.
What is the Recovery Process Like?
Since laser treatment for active acne is considered non-invasive, there will be very little downtime post-procedure. Depending upon what your doctor says, you should be able to resume normal daily activities as soon as possible. After your treatment, you may experience some redness for a few hours, but again, your post-treatment results will vary based upon the area treated and how many treatments you have received. There will be post-care instructions that you will need to follow very carefully to ensure that the laser treatment works. This will also help reduce your risk of inflammation and redness while speeding up your recovery.

A treatment for the temporary increase in clear nail in patients with onychomycosis
What is ClearSense?
The JOULE TM ClearSense system is a laser delivery technology for cosmetic improvement of dermatologic conditions including the temporary increase in clear nail for patients with onychomycosis.
What causes fungal infection in the nail (Onychomycosis)?
Onychomycosis is a non-life threatening infection of the nails caused predominantly by dermatophytes (e.g., Trichophyton Rubrum, Trichophyton Mentagrophytes), and to a lesser extent by yeasts (e.g., Candida Species) and non-dermatophytic molds. The nail fungus usually begins growing on the skin around the nail and then enters the nail bed and nail plate. Although visual changes are often observed in the nail, a proper diagnosis using a test designed to detect the presence of nail fungus is often performed to rule out other causes for the nail’s changed appearance.
Where does the fungal infection in the nail come from?
Fungi are everywhere—in the air, the dust, and the soil. Shower oors, locker rooms and swimming pools are suspected of being sources of the fungus, although there are no studies proving this fact.
What are the symptoms of fungal infection in the nail?
Infected nails often have one or more of the following undesirable changes in the nail: no luster, nail brittleness, yellow streaks, thick nails that may separate from the skin, or white spots.
What treatments are available for fungal infection in the nail?
Nail fungus is prevalent worldwide and up until now, has had very limited, ineffective and undesirable treatment options. These options include topical antifungal creams, oral antifungals or permanent removal of the nail.
- Topical (applied to the surface) – cannot penetrate the nail adequately to completely eradicate fungus and has to be applied daily.
- Oral (taken by the mouth) – not effective in all patients and side effects may include possible liver damage.
- Surgical removal or chemical dissolution of the nail plate – this often ineffective and traumatic procedure leaves the patient without a nail for months and at risk for reinfection.
- Permanent removal of the nail – this often results in a disfigured appearance.
- Laser treatment – short treatment times, minimal pain involved, no down time or side effects have been reported in the literature. The laser energy is delivered to the affected area (nail and surrounding skin). If all the fungal infection is killed by the laser energy, most patients experience some degree of a temporary increase in clear nail.
How does the ClearSense treatment work?
Sciton’s ClearSense technology heats the nail and the nail bed with laser energy resulting in a decrease of nail fungus and an increase in the growth of clear nail. The treatment involves passing the laser beam over the infected nails and surrounding skin. Your physician will repeat this until enough energy has reached the nail bed. Your nail will feel warm during the treatment.
After your physician determines you have nail fungus, the ClearSense treatment may be performed with no down time.
What can I expect with a ClearSense treatment?
- Before Treatment – clip and debride toenails, and remove any nail polish
- During Treatment – the doctor will wipe each nail clean with an alcohol wipe to make sure there is no dirt or debri. Baseline photos will be taken to document nail growth. At the time of treatment, you may feel a mild to moderate heat sensation.
- After Treatment – you can resume normal activity immediately after treatment, with no downtime. Nail polish can be applied 24 hours after the treatment. Use new shoes and wash socks thoroughly in hot water.
Long Term – follow up photographs will be taken to document nail growth. Over the next several months, most patients see some degree of continuous growth of clear healthy nails.
How many treatments will I need?
Most infections improve after one 15-20 minute treatment, however, the number of treatments will vary depending on the severity of the nail fungus. Consult your physician for the speci c number of treatments that are right for you. Immediately following treatment, no visual change in the nail will be detected, as it takes time for the clear nail to grow.
What are the possible side effects?
No signi cant side effects have been reported. You may feel slight discomfort associated with heat during treatment, but there is no pain involved post treatment. Patients may also see mild redness brie y after the treatment, but this should resolve in 24 hours.
What aftercare do I need?
You may resume normal activity immediately following treatment. After treatment, it is recommended to wear new shoes and socks that have been washed thoroughly in hot water to prevent reinfection and further spread of fungus.
Can the fungus come back?
There is a chance of re-infection as the fungus lives within the environment. Proper post-care techniques are recommended to help reduce recurrence. Consult your physician about effectiveness and outcomes.
Are there any clinical studies?
In a clinical study, 79% of treated toes improved in clear nail over 90 days following treatment.
Vascular & Redness Treatment | ClearScanTM Unmatched efficacy and safety for treating virtually all vascular lesions
What is the ClearScan?
ClearScan allows your physician to precisely treat visible vessels, broken capillaries, spider veins, vascular lesions and discoloration of your skin by using laser energy. Your treatment will be tailored to match your skin condition and desired result.
What will the ClearScan do?
Your physician will use ClearScan to restore your skin tone and color. Broken capillaries and other visible vascular structures will be gently eliminated from the upper layers of your skin surface. Unwanted vessels will be preferentially heated by the laser energy and become less noticeable.
What conditions can be treated?
- Facial Veins
- Spider Veins
- Broken Capillaries
What areas can be treated?
All skin areas can be treated. Popular areas are the face, neck, chest and legs. Discuss your needs with your physician.
How long will it take to recover?
Your healing time will depend upon your actual treatment. In most cases, there is virtually no downtime and you may resume daily activity immediately. You may experience some redness after the procedure. Your physician will answer questions about temporary changes on your skin color and how they may be camou aged.
What will happen during the procedure?
Your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. Laser energy will be delivered precisely to the area of your skin being treated. You may briefly feel a warm or hot sensation as the laser pulses are absorbed by the unwanted vessels. Your procedure may take a few minutes to half an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated.
Will it be uncomfortable?
There should be little to no discomfort, however it varies from patient to patient and depends on the treatment. There is no need for anesthesia and your physician will discuss your options to properly manage any discomfort from the treatment. There should be no prolonged post treatment discomfort.
What should I expect after treatment?
Your skin will be pink temporarily but it will resolve over time. Any vessels denatured by the laser will be reabsorbed by your body over a period of time in a natural cleansing process. Most small capillaries will become invisible almost immediately, since they will no longer contain blood.
What aftercare will I need?
It is important to follow your physician’s instructions. You may be given some skin care products and instructions on how to use them. Your skin will be sensitive to ultraviolet light, and you must avoid direct sun exposure. You need to fully cover your skin or use a good sunscreen whenever you go outdoors.
