Folks in the Denver area looking to add balance to their facial structure or enhance their chin or jawline may want to consider facial implant surgery. Here at Boulder Plastic Surgery, we recommend this procedure to those who have experienced some form of facial injury or who aren’t pleased with the placement of their cheekbones, receding chin, or jawline structure. Using natural and artificial materials to craft an implant that compliments your facial features, our skilled, board certified surgeons will help you realize the facial structure you’ve always wanted.
What is Facial Implant Surgery?
Using synthetic substances such as silicone, implants are strategically placed to bring symmetry to your overall facial structure via your jawline. Otherwise known as malar or mandibular augmentation, facial implant surgery can also be done with biological substances such as fat tissue or bone grafts. However, the biological implants often require more than one procedure and more upkeep over time. Generally, an incision is made directly inside the patient’s mouth on one or either side of the lower lip, creating a pocket that acts as ideal placement for the facial implant. For a more defined jawline, the implant is usually placed directly on the jaw itself.
Side Effects and Recovery
The length of this procedure can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on how much work you would like done. The side effects of surgery are temporary bruising, swelling, and numbness, and some patients are unable to fully open their mouths for several weeks after the surgery. In fact, it is encouraged that you don’t try to fully open your mouth in order to let the implant set and so that the incisions have a chance to fully heal.
Chewing will be restricted along with smiling and talking following the first few weeks of the procedure. Avoid any strenuous physical activity for at least 6 weeks, and don’t return to work until about one week after the surgery.
