When Should I Consider Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that smooths the eyelid skin and reduces bagginess or sagging. Both men and women can benefit from this procedure. It’s typically performed on adults in middle age. Skin wrinkling and sagging is usually caused by age-related factors including a decrease in moisture retention and less collagen in the skin.

If you’re experiencing puffiness on or below the lower lids or a drooping, wrinkling effect on the upper lids, you may be an ideal candidate for eyelid surgery. Although this minimally invasive procedure is considered a cosmetic fix, it may also help you see better, especially if your upper lids are drooping to such a degree that the lash line is now in front of your eyeball. Below, we offer some important information about this type of surgical procedure.

Problems with the Upper Lids

As the skin ages, gravity has a greater effect, and over the years, the skin droops enough so that small folds and creases form. This creates a darkened, shadowy effect that really detracts from your appearance. The upper lash line lowers and also begins to tilt forward. Blepharoplasty can correct this problem.

Smoothing the Lower Lids

Bagginess and sagging is usually caused by a buildup of fatty tissue beneath the lid skin. Eventually, the lid begins to roll and fold. Below the lid, puffiness increases and sometimes the skin below the lid begins to bulge outward. To correct this, an opening is made near the lower lash line and a tool is inserted to remove excess fat. The skin is then pulled upward. It will now lay flatter and appear more taut once the fatty tissue has been removed. This type of skin-smoothing surgery takes about one or two hours to perform. The results are long-lasting. Improving the appearance of the lids also results in a more attentive posture. You’ll look younger and more alert.

Are You a Candidate?

As stated above, this procedure is generally performed on mature adults, but genetic factors also play a role in the development of sagging lids. Younger adults may be suitable candidates as well. During a consultation, we’ll examine your eyelids closely and determine the cause and severity of the sagging or drooping of the lid skin.

What we’re looking for is wrinkling caused by skin that isn’t as supple as it once was. We’re also looking for signs of weakened muscles above and below the eyes, as this can result in sagging and creasing. Of course, we’ll also take a close look at your medical history. Some individuals aren’t suitable candidates for an eyelid lift because they have another, more serious skin condition that calls for a different treatment.
